Cancer is a general term for diseases with an abnormal growth of cells. Cancers may damage nearby body tissues or spread to other parts of the body. Some cancers are preventable by such actions as eating a healthy diet and not smoking.

Cancers are described by where they occur (site) and how advanced they are (stage 0-4, where 4 is the most advanced stage). Finding and seeking treatment for cancer while it is still at an early stage can improve the person's chance of survival.

Five-year survival rates show the percentage of patients who were still alive five years after the initial diagnosis of their cancer. Of course, five-year survival rates can only be computed for patients diagnosed more than five years ago. The data for the survival analyses in this section came from the Kentucky Cancer Registry and the National Cancer Data Base.
