Norton Hospital Psychiatric Center
For adult patients, the Norton Psychiatric Center offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care. Specialists at the psychiatric center pioneered the use of cognitive behavioral therapy, which focuses on problem solving and the correction of distorted thinking patterns. Our center also is a national leader in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders.
The Ackerly Child Psychiatry Inpatient Service
For our younger patients, the specialists of the Ackerly Child Psychiatry Inpatient service of Kosair Children’s Hospital stand ready to help. The service specializes in the evaluation, stabilization and short-term treatment of emotionally distressed children aged two to 18 years.
Its unique association with Kosair Children’s Hospital gives doctors and patients full access to the medical and surgical services of the region’s only full service children’s hospital. The service also has the opportunity to offer psychiatric counseling to children staying at the hospital receiving other medical or surgical attention.
Among the conditions and problems addressed by the service are:
- Depression
- Suicidal tendencies
- Aggression
- Hyperactivity and/or anxiousness
- Psychosis
- Autism
As with all service provided at Kosair Children’s Hospital, the child psychiatry service is dedicated to providing the best care and treatment available. Some of the services provided are:

- Expressive therapy, including art, recreation and drama
- Relaxation techniques
- Education, with two Jefferson County Public Schools classrooms
