Prevent the Flu – Get Your Flu Shot

Best way to prevent the flu is to get the flu shot

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the best way to prevent the flu is to get the flu shot. Most at risk are young children, the elderly and people in poor health. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to be fully effective, so the CDC recommends getting the shot in October, well before peak flu season hits in January and February. Get Healthy’s Jackie Hays talks with a Norton Healthcare expert about why you should get vaccinated.

The CDC urges you to take the following actions to protect yourself and others from influenza (the flu):

  • Take time to get a flu vaccine.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
  • Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them.

Flu shots are available at all Norton Immediate Care Centers and Norton Medical Group physician practices.
