The link between weight and chronic diseases

Is your waistline where it should be?

Obesity is a major health crisis in the United States. And it’s not just the obvious reasons that make it so serious – it’s the increased risk for major, life-threatening diseases, including heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Having excess fat in the midsection, specifically around the waistline, increases the risk for these diseases and can be more harmful than fat in other parts of the body. In fact, abdominal fat releases harmful substances that interfere with normal organ function and raise blood sugar levels and triglycerides.

Is your waistline where it should be? A waist size of no more than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women is considered healthy. If your waist measures more, speak with your doctor about creating a weight loss plan.

Grilled apricot-mustard glazed salmon

  • 4 6-ounce salmon fillets
  • 1½ teaspoons garlic, minced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

  • ¼ cup apricot nectar
  • ¼ cup apricot preserves
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1½ teaspoons white wine vinegar
  • 1½ teaspoons honey
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Season salmon fillets with garlic, salt and pepper while the grill is heating. Set aside for 15 minutes. In a small pan, mix the glaze ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until glaze is reduced to about ¼ cup, then set aside. Grill the salmon skin side up for 2 minutes, then turn and grill until the fish flakes with a fork or has reached desired doneness. Top each fillet with 1 tablespoon of the glaze, and grill for 30 seconds longer, then serve.
