Acupressure is an ancient Eastern healing technique that works by balancing the body’s energy through pressure applied to specific points. Acupressure is very safe, does not involve needles and can be done anywhere, at any time.
New moms — and babies — can benefit from acupressure to increase milk supply.
“This technique is great for women who have had trouble with milk supply when going back to work, women who are exclusively pumping or women who need to increase their milk supply,” said Elizabeth M. Doyle, M.D., pediatrician and director of lactation services for Norton Healthcare.
You do not need to go to an acupressure practitioner to benefit from this practice. You can use acupressure on yourself. Here’s how:
Apply gentle pressure with the pads of your fingers or thumbs to these five areas, 2 to 5 minutes, three times per day:
A. Forehead – Directly between the eyebrows, in the indentation where bridge of nose meets the forehead B. Breastbone – In the center of the sternum, three thumb-widths up from the base of the bone C. Upper chest – On the outer part of the upper chest, three finger-widths below the collarbone D. Middle chest – On the chest, directly above the breast in line with the nipples, between the third and fourth ribs E. Nipple area – Just outside of the nipple on the areola (the dark part of the breast around the nipple)
