One of the great weapons that people can use to fight mental, physical and emotional fatigue and exhaustion is deep breathing. Deep breathing can bring refreshment and rejuvenation of the mind, body and soul in a matter of minutes. Deep breathing is essential to relaxation and good performance. Slow, deep, rhythmic breathing causes a reflex stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which results in a reduction in the heart rate and relaxation of the muscles. Since the mind and body are mutually interdependent, these two dynamics cause a spontaneous effect of relaxation of the mind. Additionally, the brain depends on oxygen to regulate its function of reducing anxiety and nervousness.
Deep breathing should be done slowly and rhythmically; breathe in through your nose, slowly – feeling the air and taking it in all the way down, through your lungs and into your belly, feeling it in the center of your being or at your navel. The navel is the outward marking point and the inner connection to your spirit self. Hold your breath in that place for several seconds, and then release it slowly through your mouth in a slightly blowing fashion. As you inhale you are breathing in the energizing life force from the universe; the vital energy that keeps the body alive and maintains a state of good health. When you exhale you are releasing the negative energy stored in your body. Inhaling and exhaling three contiguous times each session will very often produce noticeable results.
This brief, energizing exercise is best done in a quiet environment with minimal distraction. The purpose is to quiet your mind, tuning out all external stimuli and traveling at the speed of light to that quiet and serene place within; the center of your being. Sitting quietly in our center while focusing on deep breathing provides us with the fuel needed to recharge our battery and renews our strength for the tasks which lies ahead. A little goes a long way.
Go ahead and try it now. As often as you think to do this simple yet effective exercise, you will be refreshed, renewed and restored to your optimum performance.
Genesis 2:7. And the Lord God formed humankind … and breathed into our nostrils the breath of life; and we became living souls.
