Pregnant women who use ranitidine — also known by the brand name Zantac — to relieve heartburn and acid reflux should stop taking the medication and consider alternatives, according to obstetricians with Norton Women’s Care.

Pregnant women often suffer heartburn, and ranitidine has been a popular remedy. Recent recalls of the over-the-counter medication, however, have raised alarms.

Obstetricians with Norton Women’s Care report that patients have been asking about what to do in light of the Food and Drug Administration’s announcement about ranitidine.

The FDA recently announced a recall of the medication made by Sandoz Inc. and Apotex Inc. The tablets may contain low levels of NDMA, a probable carcinogen.

Heartburn and acid reflux also can be treated with over-the-counter medications Tums, Mylanta, Maalox or famotidine (Pepcid).
