Norton Children’s Hospital’s leading-edge pediatric care includes being a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center. Norton Children’s Hospital is the only facility in Louisville to have this top-level certification for helping injured kids.
To be a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center designated by the American College of Surgeons, a facility has to show it can provide total care for every aspect of injury — from prevention through rehabilitation.
Other benefits of a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center include:
- 24-hour in-house coverage by general surgeons, and prompt availability of care in pediatric specialties such as orthopedic surgery; neurosurgery; anesthesiology; emergency medicine; radiology; internal medicine; plastic surgery; oral and maxillofacial surgery; and critical care
- Referral resource for nearby communities
- Leader in prevention and public education to surrounding communities
Norton Children’s Hospital emergency department is also home to the “Just for Kids” Transport Team. The team uses specially equipped mobile intensive care units, an airplane and a helicopter to provide transportation for young patients in need of sophisticated, sometimes life-sustaining emergency care.
The emergency heliport is located on the hospital’s roof.
