Susan G. Komen community grants support ‘bold goal’ to cut breast cancer deaths 50 percent by 2026

Norton Healthcare Prevention & Wellness’s breast cancer screening program has been selected by Susan G. Komen Kentucky as a recipient for a 2018 community awards grant. The $57,967 grant will help provide mammograms for uninsured or underinsured women. It also will support Promotoras, a special outreach initiative to reach Hispanic/Latino community members.

The Norton Healthcare Mobile Prevention Center provides mammograms and other health services to women in our community who lack access to critical health resources. The Mobile Prevention Center did 2,620 mammograms last year.

According to Susan G. Komen Kentucky, breast cancer mortality in the U.S. has decreased 38 percent since 1989. Grant-funded projects are selected based on how they can help further the organization’s “bold goal” to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths 50 percent by 2026.

Krista MacArthur, clinical manager of Norton Healthcare Prevention & Wellness, calls breast cancer screening a “health care success story.” She points out that over the past four decades public advocacy and increased awareness have come together with research and treatment advances to improve long-term survival rates significantly.

“We know breast cancer screening works,” Krista said. “Early detection is making a big impact, so we welcome this support to help take mammograms and other important wellness services to underserved women in our community.”

This year’s recipients of Komen’s Community Grants Program include five organizations working to provide breast cancer screenings, treatment and survivor support. Other 2018 grant recipients in the region include University of Louisville Medical Center; Saint Joseph Hospital, Lexington, Kentucky; Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Ashland, Kentucky; and Flaget Memorial Hospital, Bardstown, Kentucky.
