Simplicity™ blood pressure procedure
Innovative Care for Resistant Hypertension
Norton Heart & Vascular Institute is a regional leader in the treatment of advanced and treatment-resistant hypertension. Hypertension affects nearly half of American adults, yet only about one in four people with the condition have it under control. Patients with advanced hypertension at Norton Heart & Vascular Institute can benefit from access to cutting-edge therapies, including the Symplicity™ blood pressure procedure — also known as the Symplicity Spyral renal denervation (RDN) system.
The Simplicity™ blood pressure procedure, also known as renal denervation or renal ablation, is a minimally invasive procedure designed to lower high blood pressure, particularly in patients whose hypertension remains uncontrolled (also known as resistant hypertension) despite medication and lifestyle changes. It works by disrupting overactive nerves in the renal arteries that contribute to elevated blood pressure and results in long-term relief.
By targeting the overactive nerves that contribute to high blood pressure, RDN offers a new path to control for people who have exhausted other treatment options. The procedural benefit of a renal ablation for patients includes:
Significant Blood Pressure Reduction
Minimally Invasive with Quick Recovery
Durable, Long-Term Results
Low Risk of Serious Complications
Reduced Need for Medications
No Adverse Impact on Kidney Function
During the procedure, patients are first sedated using local anesthesia. Then a very thin tube (a catheter) is inserted into the artery leading to the kidney. The Symplicity Spyral renal denervation (RDN) system uses radiofrequency energy to calm the excessive activity of the nerves connected to the kidney. Since the procedure only requires local anesthesia, patients can typically go home on the same day.
