Obstetricians (the OB in OB/GYN) specialize in pregnancy and childbirth, while gynecologists (GYN) focus on overall female reproductive health. OB/GYNs specialize in both.

Your primary care provider (PCP) is your first point of contact for most health needs, while your OB/GYN is your specialist for women’s reproductive and pregnancy health. Both can overlap in preventive care, but their expertise and training differ. Choosing the right one depends on your specific health needs.

See your PCP for general health issues, chronic disease management and illnesses not related to the body’s reproductive system.

See your OB/GYN for reproductive health concerns, pregnancy care, contraception, menopause and related gynecologic issues.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends a preventive gynecologic health visit between ages 13 and 15. Our providers recommend between ages 11 and 13. The visit often does not include a pelvic exam, unless there are strong reasons to indicate one is necessary. The goal of the visit is for health promotion, education and screening. It is an opportunity for patients to establish a relationship with a gynecologist, evaluate their current health (patterns and regularity of periods, cramping, etc.), and receive information and resources for staying healthy. Many options!

Implants (three to 10 years depending on device)

Depo-Provera (injection every three months)

Vaginal ring (inserted monthly)

Yes. Our providers offer evaluation and treatment for perimenopause and menopause symptoms, including hot flashes, mood changes, sleep concerns and hormone-related changes. Hormone replacement therapy also may be discussed, if appropriate. You can schedule an appointment with your current provider or schedule a virtual visit.

When should I have my first mammogram?  How often should I get a mammogram?

Yearly screening mammograms are not recommended for most women until age 40. Learn more about breast health.

I just found out I’m pregnant, what now?

Congratulations! You will want to schedule your initial prenatal visit. (Typically we see our expectant moms around eight to 10 weeks of pregnancy).  For more information about what to expect or what to eat (or not to eat), call our at (502) 559-2229 (BABY).

You’ll have an ultrasound , include blood withdrawals. You’ll meet with a provider and review what to expect during pregnancy.

  • Doctors have the broadest scope, including surgical and high-risk care.
  • Nurse practitioners and certified nurse midwives focus on low-risk pregnancies and women’s health, with certified nurse midwives having the most specialized midwifery training.
  • Certified nurse midwives are a type of advanced practice provider with a specific certification in pregnancy and childbirth, often preferred for natural birth and holistic care.

Yes, we offer a variety of childbirth and expectant parent classes. See a listing of our classes.

No, but we do offer water labor. You can labor in the tub until it’s time to start pushing — then you will be moved to a bed to deliver. Labor tubs are just for labor, not delivery.

There are many factors influencing childbirth options such as medical history, your health and the health of your baby. We provide VBAC services. You can talk to your provider to see if it is right for you.

Regular follow-up appointments with your OB/GYN play an important role in your postpartum care, recovery and overall health and safety. These checkups are scheduled in the weeks after childbirth and monitor your physical recovery and emotional well-being.

The days and weeks after your baby’s birth can be as overwhelming as they are exciting. It’s a time of powerful emotions: joy, excitement, anxiety — and sometimes sadness. After giving birth, women can experience feelings of sadness that range from mild (known as the “baby blues”) to severe (postpartum depression).

Baby blues are common after childbirth, affecting between 50% and 75 % percent of new moms. This condition can include mood swings, irritability, crying spells and trouble sleeping. The baby blues typically start within the first few days of giving birth and can last up to two weeks.

Postpartum depression may be mistaken for the baby blues at first, but the symptoms are more intense, last longer and may interfere with daily life. Symptoms usually develop within the first few weeks after giving birth but may begin up to a year after childbirth.

Norton Women’s Care offers a variety of breastfeeding services. Learn more.
