Norton Healthcare is taking steps to ensure our LGBTQ community can expect inclusive health care.

Health care is a universal need; however, some people do not receive quality care because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Sometimes they are referred to as the “hidden population.”

People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ)  may face discrimination, social stigma and denial of civil and human rights. Hospitals and doctors’ offices are places where this should never happen. When it does, it can lead to depression, anxiety, substance abuse and other unhealthy behaviors, even suicide.

Norton Healthcare is taking steps to ensure our LGBTQ community can always expect the following when seeking medical care:

• Confidentiality: All patients want a safe, trusted environment in which to heal. Confidentiality means protection of identity, and personal and health information.

• Acceptance: Every patient is treated the same, regardless of differences. Acceptance fosters strong relationships that ensure patients feel safe and return for follow-up care.

• Knowledgeable care: Health providers understand the unique health care needs of LGBTQ persons and can recommend screenings and health advice to keep patients healthy.

• Network of care: One bad interaction can prevent a patient from seeking care for many years, putting their health at risk. We offer an inclusive network of providers who understand the needs of the LGBTQ community and provide a safe space to seek care.

Norton Healthcare also established an LGBTQ employee resource group, called NPride, to support employee and patient initiatives.
