Since opening its doors on Nov. 11, 2024, Norton West Louisville Hospital has had more than 58,000 patient interactions, meeting a critical need to expand access to outpatient care, hospital and emergency services, as well as primary and specialty care in West Louisville. Norton West Louisville Hospital is the first hospital to be built west of Ninth Street in more than 150 years. For many in the surrounding neighborhoods, the hospital has meant easier access to care.

“We promised to help improve health equity in West Louisville and make access to care easier,” said Russell F. Cox, president and CEO, Norton Healthcare. “We’ve heard countless stories about how this facility is making a difference, whether it’s connecting people to primary care, making prescriptions more accessible through the retail pharmacy, supporting preventive screenings or providing nutritious food through the on-site food pantry.”

In its first year, Norton West Louisville Hospital has:

  • Served patients 58,500 times through primary care, preventive screenings, emergency services, surgery and inpatient care
  • Provided 12,000 meals through the food pantry partnership with Dare to Care
  • Filled nearly 53,500 prescriptions in the outpatient retail pharmacy
  • Helped 2,132 patients find support, including housing, transportation, employment, literacy, job training and nutrition

“Each patient is someone who received care and support they may not have otherwise had access to,” said Corenza Townsend, chief administrative officer, Norton West Louisville Hospital. “Our goal was to change lives by improving health outcomes, and I believe we’re doing just that. “We’re in this for the long term and will continue to listen to the community to respond to needs.”

The $90 million, 90,000-square-foot hospital is located at 850 S. 28th St. on the Norton Healthcare Goodwill Opportunity Campus. It employs more than 300 people in a variety of clinical and nonclinical positions.

In 2024, health equity data published by Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness still shows that life expectancy for residents of West Louisville is 15 years lower than for those living in other areas of the city.
