May is National Bike Month, a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling —and encourage others to give it a try.

Whether you bike to work or school, ride for your health or the environment, or simply to explore, National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride.

So why not join in on Friday, May 19, as part of Louisville’s 12th annual Bike to Work Day celebration.

To make things easier and safer, there are four designated spots in the Metro area where cyclists can meet up and ride together. Beginning at 7 a.m., a ride captain will lead each group to Fourth Street Live! in downtown Louisville, arriving by 8 a.m. All riders must wear a helmet.

Meet-and-ride locations:

  • Seneca Park – Meet at the basketball court parking lot, just west of the tennis courts at 7 a.m.
  • Iroquois Park – Meet at the amphitheater parking lot at 7 a.m.
  • Shawnee Park – Meet at the Southwestern and Broadway entrance at 7 a.m.
  • Southern Indiana – Meet at the top of the ramp on the Indiana side of the Big Four Bridge at 7:30 a.m.

Then everyone is welcome at a lunchtime celebration at Fourth Street Live! from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. This is a chance to meet up with other commuters, learn more about bicycle commuting, visit with vendors and just celebrate the bicycle.

One lucky Bike to Work Day registrant will win a new, fully loaded commuting bike from Parkside Bike Shop — no purchase necessary! There also will be drawings for other prizes.

You will be amazed at where your lungs and legs can take you!
