Race day is quickly approaching — it’s almost time to put all of your training to the test! If this is your first or 40th Kentucky Derby Festival miniMarathon or Marathon, we have info and tips that can help make race day easier.

Days before the race

  • Keep an eye out for emails with important info about the race. You’ll be reminded of packet-pickup opportunities, your assigned corral, start time and other information.
  •  Check traffic and parking. Parking is a bit tricky downtown. If you live close to the start, consider biking or a warmup run to get there without any anxiety.

The night before the race

  • Dinner is even more important than the breakfast before the race. Make sure you have a well-balanced meal of lean protein and carbs. Hydration also is important, so stick with water instead of caffeinated drinks or alcohol.
  • Check the weather. It’s a good idea to check the forecast and plan what you’ll wear on race day ahead of time.
  • Lay your clothes and gear out the night before. This step can help you ease your mind for race day — you won’t have worry that you’ve forgotten anything crucial for your run.
  • Expect that you won’t get a good night’s sleep. You might be nervous or worried. So make sure the week leading up is filled with rest.

Race day morning

  • Give yourself plenty of time. Schedule the morning of the race to give yourself time get ready, eat, hydrate and travel to the start line. You will want to eat first thing, and then take a snack and water with you to have a few minutes before the start. Don’t forget your nutrition for during the race too!
  • Find your corral and line up 10 to15 minutes before the start. It’s easier than you think! There are large signs along Main Street that state the different corral letters. Try your best to start in your assigned corral. You also may find an official KDF pacer to help you keep a steady pace throughout the race.
  • It’s crowded. Expect a lot of people! The miniMarathon and Marathon typically have about 15,000 or more participants each year.
  • Watch your pace. The excitement of the race start might push you to run a bit faster during those first couple of miles. Keep your cool and check your pace. An official KDF pacer can help during this time. You can do it!
  • Ask for help if you need it. Norton Healthcare provides medical tents staffed with doctors, nurses and athletic trainers along the route to help you should you experience anything from cramps to a medical emergency. Norton Healthcare is proud to be KDF’s official medical provider.
