The “biggest game of the year” will be watched by millions on Sunday, Feb. 7. This big game day usually includes a party or two, complete with traditional game day foods such as chicken wings, potato skins, chips and dip, brownies and a variety of other delicious, but not so healthy options. If you’re watching your waistline and either hosting or attending a game day party this weekend, try one of these tasty alternatives:
1 – Try baking instead of frying your chicken wings. Baked chicken wings still taste great, and coated with a delicious sauce, no one will know the difference. If you need that crunch on your chicken, coat chicken tenders or chicken chunks with panko bread crumbs and bake. Serve with Buffalo sauce or low-fat ranch dressing for dipping.
2 – Swap French fries with other crunchy finger foods. Cut zucchini into sticks, coat in panko, Parmesan cheese and paprika, and bake for a crunchy substitution for frozen French fries or try your hand at homemade sweet potato fries. You can also bake string cheese coated with panko for homemade cheese sticks and serve fresh raw veggies and dip for more crunchy finger foods.
3 – Use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. If you’re making a creamy dip, substitute Greek yogurt for the sour cream or mayonnaise called for in the recipe. You’ll reduce the calories but keep the flavor. You could also forgo creamy dips altogether and serve homemade salsa or guacamole.
4 – Serve healthier sweet treats. Bake a batch of homemade low-fat brownies or try carrot cake. Serve fresh fruit too. There are many low-calorie alternatives to store-bought cakes, pies and cookies.
If you’re in a pinch and need a healthy recipe, try one of these:
Oven fried chicken Three bean edamame salad Apple chips Apple salad Red quinoa and roasted tomato salad Longhorn caviar Fresh tomato salsa Bean, tomato and orzo salad
