Cocoa beans are among the highest scoring foods when it comes to antioxidant activity. What does that mean? It means that we should all be eating dark chocolate — especially today, National Chocolate Day!

A food’s antioxidant activity is a measure of its ability to fight free radicals. Dark chocolate is nutritious on many different levels. It contains fiber, iron, magnesium, copper and manganese and has many super powers. The flavanols — a kind of nutrient — in dark chocolate may have the ability to lower blood pressure and protect your skin against sun damage. Additionally, dark chocolate may decrease your LDL cholesterol, thus lowering your risk of heart disease.

When it comes to dark chocolate, it’s important to know what you are purchasing. Find a dark chocolate product with 70 percent or higher cocoa content. Also, remember that dark chocolates often contain added sugar, so enjoy them in moderation.
