Norton West Louisville Hospital is beginning to take shape at the corner of 28th Street and Broadway, with steel frame rising from the ground. The hospital is on schedule to be complete and be admitting patients by the end of 2024.
The new hospital will include an emergency room, primary care, pediatric care, specialized services and much more.
“For so long we’ve been talking about this and seeing the renderings of what it will look like — now we are beginning to see this historic facility take shape as the steel is going up,” Russell F. Cox, president and CEO, Norton Healthcare, said at a news conference.
About 500 steel beams and columns – 600 tons of steel – will be put in place to support the structure.
The hospital’s purpose to improve access to health care has inspired doctors and nurses across the country and locally to reach out to be a part of the effort. Hiring for all aspects of staffing the hospital will begin in the spring and summer of 2024.
Following months of listening to feedback from community members, Norton Healthcare is implementing those ideas as the hospital is built.
“In the construction of this hospital we have taken an inclusive, community approach with our design and construction team. This has been a unique collaboration that is truly bringing new businesses to this project,” Russ said.
Comprehensive services at the new hospital will include adult and pediatric primary care physician offices, a 24-hour emergency department, 20 inpatient beds, outpatient services and diagnostic services — such as cancer screenings, X-rays and CT scans — along with specialty services, including women’s health, cardiology, neurology and endocrinology.
The hospital is on the Norton Healthcare Goodwill Opportunity Campus. A Goodwill facility, which will be a 124,000-square-foot, one-stop lifestyle enrichment center, is also under construction at the site.
The investment at the campus is expected to spur future developments in an area that has been underserved for too long.
As the new hospital’s construction continues, look for the last steel beam to be installed by the end of October with a topping-off event and roof installation to follow.
