Norton Sleep Center has been at the forefront of research, diagnosis and treatment of sleep medicine, including restless legs syndrome, for more than 40 years.
RLS is a condition that causes uncontrollable urges to move your legs to alleviate leg pain. It typically happens in the evening or nighttime hours, causing a disruption to healthy sleep patterns. It can begin at any age, and typically increases as you age. The pain may be mild, moderate or severe, and causes you to lose sleep — affecting your mental and physical health.
Moving or walking it off helps, but the symptoms recur once you are resting again. It is a frustrating and debilitating disorder that affects nearly 10% of the population.
The team will determine a treatment plan for your restless legs syndrome after testing you and reviewing your medical history. Blood tests help us understand if there is an iron deficiency. Medical history lets us know if lifestyle changes such as eliminating caffeine or certain over-the-counter drugs might help.
Medication therapy is also an option, and we’ve seen success with it. Medications developed for other diseases can help. Drugs that increase dopamine in the brain or affect calcium channels can be effective.
Although there is no cure for restless legs syndrome, these treatments as well as others can help patients manage RLS and get a good night’s sleep, with few or no symptoms.
Norton Sleep Center locations are staffed with fellowship-trained and board-certified physicians and sleep technologists who are experienced in diagnosing and treating a variety of sleep disorders.
