Intragastric Balloon

Learn More

Norton Weight Management Services offers gastric balloon placement, a nonsurgical procedure for weight loss, for patients in Louisville and Southern Indiana. The safe and effective weight loss solution is intended for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to 40.

What Is a Gastric Balloon?

The soft, yet durable, weight loss balloon is designed to fit comfortably in your stomach. It takes up space in your stomach, which encourages portion control and helps you lose weight.

The placement of the balloon is a simple, nonsurgical outpatient procedure performed under sedation while your physician places the balloon and fills it with saline solution. Once filled, the balloon is about the size of a grapefruit. The entire procedure usually takes 20 to 30 minutes, and patients can expect to go home the same day.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved three balloon systems for weight loss:

  • Orbera lntragastric Balloon System
  • ReShape Integrated Dual Balloon System
  • Obalon Balloon System

The Orbera and ReShape devices are put in place endoscopically. The Obalon is swallowed by the patient through guided fluoroscopy. Endoscopy is required to remove it.

How Long Does a Gastric Balloon Stay in?

A gastric balloon remains in place for up to six months, and you’ll likely have monthly follow-ups. During this time you may see the most dramatic weight loss.

Our specialists will provide you with a personalized diet and exercise coaching while the balloon is in place. We’ll work with you to develop healthy habits to carry you forward in your weight loss journey. Dietitians will be available to you for six months after the removal of the gastric balloon.
