Norton Sleep Center is the leader in treating sleep issues, including snoring, for patients in Louisville and Southern Indiana. For more than 40 years, we’ve been on the cutting edge of research, diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders.
Snoring may seem harmless, but in some cases it could indicate a higher risk for more serious conditions such as sleep apnea, high blood pressure or stroke. That’s why it’s important to stop snoring for your own health, not to mention for the sake of your partner.
The board-certified and fellowship-trained specialists at Norton Sleep Center are pioneers in the study and treatment of sleep disorders and have helped thousands stop snoring.
In some cases, a temporary condition such as a cold or allergies can cause snoring. But if you are a habitual snorer, you should seek testing and treatment.
When you snore, your breathing causes the relaxed tissues in your throat to vibrate. Excess weight, alcohol close to bedtime and sleeping on your back all can contribute to snoring. For women, menopause or hormone changes can cause snoring due to loss of muscle tone.
Snoring also can be an indication of sleep apnea — a condition in which you stop breathing repeatedly through the night. With less oxygen reaching the brain, you can experience complications such as fatigue and depression. There is also a higher risk of high blood pressure, stroke or heart attack.
Obstructive sleep apnea increases blood sugar levels while you sleep, causing health issues for diabetics.
Snoring combined with breathing pauses, excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating, sore throat in the morning, disruption to your partner’s sleep or chest pain at night are all reasons to see a Norton Sleep Center specialist.
Snoring also can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea in children. Watch for an especially poor attention span, behavior concerns at school or poor performance in classes. Norton Children’s provides care for a variety of sleep disorders in infants, children and teens. Norton Children’s Pediatric Sleep Centers provide sleep studies for children of all ages.
To determine whether you have obstructive sleep apnea, your sleep specialist will prescribe either an in-lab or home sleep study.
If sleep apnea doesn’t accompany your snoring, recommended changes could include losing weight, avoiding alcohol close to bedtime, addressing nasal congestion, getting plenty of sleep and avoiding sleeping on your back.
Sleep apnea treatments range from dental mouthpieces and positive airway pressure machines to surgery.
Norton Sleep Center locations are staffed with fellowship-trained and board-certified physicians and sleep technologists who are experienced in diagnosing and treating a variety of sleep disorders.
