Tumors of the musculoskeletal system are abnormal growths of cells that develop in bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and blood vessels. The tumors may be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Orthopedic oncology is a highly specialized orthopedic subspecialty that provides diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumors.
While our Norton Orthopedic Institute specialists often can treat benign tumors, malignant tumors are referred to orthopedic oncologist George T. Calvert, M.D., who works with a multidisciplinary team of oncologists and radiologists. Dr. Calvert evaluates and treats musculoskeletal tumors and metastatic lesions, cancer that has spread to the bones. He also manages orthopedic conditions in cancer patients, such as fractures, trauma, arthritis, avascular necrosis, osteoporosis and infections, which may require specialized treatment in conjunction with cancer treatment.
Our orthopedic specialists provide treatment for the following benign bone and soft-tissue tumors and related conditions:
More patients choose Norton Orthopedic Institute for hip or knee replacements and other orthopedic procedures than any other health care provider in Louisville or Southern Indiana.
