Norton Healthcare Administrative Fellowship Program

The Norton Healthcare Administrative Fellowship Program is designed for postgraduate students looking to explore meaningful careers in health care administration. The two-year program puts you on a path for significant career growth through performance excellence projects, strategic planning and leadership exposure. Select one of these three tracks:

  • Norton Healthcare system: This track exposes you to our entire health system, which includes nine hospitals and a comprehensive employed medical group.
  • Norton Medical Group: This track focuses on our health system’s medical group of over 2,000 employed providers and more than 400 primary care and specialty practices.
  • Norton Philanthropy Fellowship: This track will have a strong emphasis on fundraising for pediatric services and expanding the didactic components of graduate level training, raising the funds to support initiatives.

Through Norton Healthcare’s system administrative fellowship, fellows will be immersed in large-scale, high-impact projects that directly benefit the organization. These projects will provide the opportunity to work in a variety of health care sectors, with the goal of improving efficiencies, financial performance, clinical outcomes and/or quality. Fellows will gain exposure to senior leadership and be directly involved in executive meetings, initiatives and other strategic matters that offer a better understanding of the issues, challenges and opportunities facing a large health care system. Preceptors for the system administrative fellowship include the system director of performance excellence and the chief performance and integration officer.

Master’s degree required for the system administrative fellowship track.

The Norton Medical Group fellowship track is designed to give fellows a deep understanding of how a large medical group operates. Fellows learn from leaders at Norton Healthcare and gain insights into various aspects of health care delivery.

During the first year, fellows are exposed to the executive leadership team, including the chief administrative officer and system vice presidents. They complete 27 different rotations across various departments, receiving diverse and comprehensive training. While completing their 27 rotations, fellows engage in high-level projects and contribute to key initiatives. The second year allows for deeper immersions, as fellows select areas of interest and contribute through projects or interim leadership roles.

Year 1 Experience

  • Rotations including, but not limited to, ten service lines; health information management and Epic (electronic medical records) functionality; employee and patient experience; finance; inpatient clinical operations; strategic planning; and more

Year 2 Experience

  • Immersion experiences — clinic leader roles across service lines, operational optimization and process improvement

Project Work:

Norton Medical Group administrative fellows engage in hands-on collaboration with leaders across the organization, contributing to projects that drive innovation and improvement in health care delivery. These projects are designed to be mutually beneficial, fostering professional growth for the fellow while advancing Norton Healthcare’s mission of providing exceptional care to our community.

Professional Growth:

The fellows report to the vice president of operations, who provides guidance, support and feedback throughout the fellowship journey. The fellows are encouraged to develop relationships with other leaders at Norton Healthcare. These relationships forge strong connections to the organization and our community, facilitating meaningful professional development. Fellows also have opportunities for career networking, introductory meetings and further educational advancement within Norton Healthcare and the community.

The postgraduate philanthropy fellow serves as a key resource within the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation and Norton Healthcare Foundation. During their two-year commitment, the fellow will work closely with their assigned executive mentor as well as other key leaders in the Norton Healthcare system in pursuit of organizational goals across Norton Healthcare’s pillars of success. As a philanthropy administrative fellow, you will have experiences focusing on learning the internal operations of a multimillion-dollar philanthropic organization while contributing to strategic grantmaking, research and administrative processes.

You’ll experience:

  • Professional and leadership development, gaining exposure to budgeting, compliance and other operational components
  • Strategic planning and evaluation, assisting with impact measurement or strategic review process
  • Grantmaking and program support by assisting with proposal review, grant evaluations and reporting
  • Development management training, by building donor relations and stewardship, prospect research, fundraising strategies and data management including customer relationship management (CRM) tools.
  • Event planning and project execution, managing logistics and sponsorships, including organizing fundraising events to engage donors and raise critical funds
  • Exposure to hospital, medical group, and system leadership, including networking opportunities

Year 1 Experience:

  • Data management processing and CRM training
