A Typical Day for a Surgical Technologist at Norton Healthcare

Surgical technologists are an important part of the operating room team and work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate safe care of patients during procedures.

The program will provide education and training on topics including:

  • Gathering and opening supplies necessary for surgical procedures
  • Performing surgical hand scrub
  • Preparing and maintaining a sterile field and operating room
  • Passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon
  • Assisting in preparing the patient for surgery
  • Preparing medications
  • Handling and preparing specimens
  • Coordinating and assisting in room turnover
  • Maneuvering endoscopic cameras
  • Performing instrument counts
  • Anticipating needs of patients and surgeons
  • Gowning and gloving other team members
  • Disassembling sterile field
  • Cleaning and preparation of instruments for sterilization
  • Transporting instruments to decontamination area
  • Sponging, suctioning and cutting sutures

Surgical technologists assist other members of the health care team in the delivery of patient care during surgeries. The major focus for the position is on preparation and handling of instrumentation and surgical equipment and assisting the surgeon during the procedure.

The surgical technologist must be knowledgeable of specific procedures or specialties, and must prioritize and effectively plan and problem-solve due to the changing nature of the work situation during surgical procedures. Surgical technologists must have the ability to recognize the need for immediate response during urgent or emergent situations. The surgical technologist also must have basic knowledge of medical terminology, the metric system and aseptic technique and apply this knowledge in all patient and family interactions.
