Norton Pulmonary Specialists is a leader in treating interstitial lung disease (ILD) for patients in Louisville and Southern Indiana.

The board-certified and fellowship-trained specialists at Norton Pulmonary Specialists have the experience and training to manage interstitial lung disease.

Interstitial lung disease refers to multiple disorders that can inflame and scar lung tissue. Sometimes there is only one cause. Sometimes there are a host of causes. That’s where we come in.

Exposure to hazardous materials over a long period of time can be a cause of interstitial lung disease. Autoimmune diseases are also possible causes.

Our pulmonologists have the experience and training to find the underlying causes of interstitial lung disease. Typically, we gather enough data to make a determination using minimally invasive techniques. After reaching a precise diagnosis, we work with you to tailor a treatment plan specific to you. From the first test to outpatient therapy, our team is with you every step of the way help you live your best life.

What Is Interstitial Lung Disease?

ILD involves scarring or inflammation of lung tissues that makes it difficult to breathe and provide oxygen to your bloodstream. Long-term exposure to asbestos and autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis are known causes of ILD. In some cases, the cause isn’t known.

Lung scarring isn’t reversible. Treatment focuses on slowing the damage of ILD with medication.

Possible Complications of ILD

  • Pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in your lungs’ arteries)
  • Right-sided heart failure as the right ventricle has to work harder to pump blood through the pulmonary arteries
  • Respiratory failure as low oxygen levels and high pressure in the pulmonary arteries cause heart failure
