More people in Louisville and Southern Indiana choose Norton Neuroscience Institute for neurologic care than any other provider in the area. While a cure has yet to be found for Parkinson’s disease, Norton Neuroscience Institute offers some of the most advanced treatments available to help control your symptoms.

Parkinson’s usually affects people between the ages of 55 and 75, but it can develop earlier. Nearly 1 million Americans are living with the disease.

Parkinson’s disease can be unpredictable, and sometimes it can feel unmanageable. With a personalized treatment plan, we help manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life. All of our movement disorders specialists work together, sharing insights, ideas and expertise to give you the benefit of many specialists’ viewpoints. In addition to the benefits of collaboration, you can schedule multiple appointments for the same day at the same location.

Together, our team’s diverse perspectives can provide a robust care plan that works for you and your lifestyle — beginning from diagnosis and as your disease progresses. We are with you every step of the way.

Diagnosing Parkinson’s disease

A neurologist can make a diagnosis based on:

  • Medical history
  • Symptoms, including severity
  • Neurologic and physical examinations
  • Blood tests
  • Imaging scans, such as MRI

The Syn-One Test is a simple skin test that can help doctors confirm or rule out a suspected Parkinson’s disease diagnosis. Alpha synuclein is a protein found in the brain that is key to brain function. Alpha synuclein clumps are abnormal clusters of this protein and are one of the hallmark symptoms of neurologic disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia. The test takes about 15 minutes. Skin biopsies are taken from three places on the body and sent to a lab for testing for the alpha-synuclein protein. Along with other diagnostic tools, this test may help physicians make a more accurate and timely diagnosis.

Advanced Treatment at the Cressman Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders Center

Treatment for Parkinson’s disease is directed at relieving symptoms, usually through medication or surgery. General lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, support groups, occupational therapy and speech therapy have been shown to be helpful for some patients. Our specialists stay at the forefront of rapidly developing advances in medication and surgical techniques to offer state-of-the-art treatment for Parkinson’s disease.

During a deep brain stimulation (DBS) procedure, our neurosurgeons place electrodes precisely inside your brain to alter nerve signals that cause symptoms such as tremors, rigidity and stiffness. The electrodes deliver mild pulses generated from a small device implanted in your chest. DBS typically improves motor symptoms by 50% to 80% or more.

Norton Neuroscience Institute neurosurgeons have advanced DBS training and technology and have one of the few programs to offer DBS while patients are under general anesthesia. Traditionally, all patients had to be awake to improve placement of the electrodes. Advanced techniques allow our providers to achieve precise electrode placement while the patient is unconscious, making the procedure faster and safer.

A consultation with a Norton Neuroscience Institute neurosurgeon and a series of tests help determine whether you are a candidate for DBS.
