Entry-level study includes practical application of music therapy procedures and techniques learned in the classroom through required fieldwork in facilities. Students learn to assess the needs of clients, develop and implement treatment plans, and evaluate and document clinical changes. AMTA has more information about becoming a music therapist.

Music therapy at Norton Healthcare operates out of several departments, including rehabilitation services, child life and Norton Cancer Institute. Music therapists provide a wide range of clinical services for patients with mental and physical health care needs. Norton Healthcare music therapy interns have the opportunity to:

  • Provide patient- and family-centered care for inpatient and outpatient services
  • Provide services for patients of various ages and diagnoses
  • Provide group services for patients with mental health needs
  • Receive supervision from multiple music therapists
  • Participate in projects, presentations and specialized trainings
  • Gain experience working with palliative care, rehabilitation, mental health, oncology, pediatric and neonatal intensive care (NICU) populations
