Oncology massage has been shown to relieve symptoms for cancer patients — improving mood, decreasing anxiety, depression and pain. The benefits can last up to two days.
Typically, oncology massage involves manipulation of soft tissue using light touch massage. Patients report that massage helps them take their mind off their cancer journey, taking an hour that’s just for them.
With experience and training in how cancer and its treatments affect the body, oncology massage therapists respond to the patient’s unique needs for positioning and pressure levels.
Patients are positioned however they want. For instance, if a patient recently had surgery, they may be propped up, may lie on their side or choose any position that’s comfortable for them that day.
The level of pressure applied by the oncology massage therapist is guided by the patient’s comfort.
At Norton Cancer Institute, massage therapy is available for patients currently receiving treatment either as outpatients or inpatients. The service is provided by a licensed massage therapist at no cost to you.
Hours and availability vary by location. Ask your nurse if oncology massage is available during your next appointment.
