For many, a cancer diagnosis can bring about a wide range of emotions, including sadness, fear and worries about the unknown.

The Norton Cancer Institute Behavioral Oncology Program is staffed by a team trained and equipped to care for the emotional and mental health needs of patients and their families.

Norton Cancer Institute is one of few oncology programs nationwide offering a robust program for mental and emotional health needs.

Cancer-related distress may include:

  • Feeling overwhelmed to the point of panic
  • Feeling so sad that you cannot go through treatment
  • Increased irritability and anger
  • Inability to cope with pain, fatigue or nausea
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, uselessness, hopelessness or helplessness
  • Constant thoughts of cancer and/or death
  • Loss of enjoyment in activities

Treatments and Services

Our behavioral oncologists offer full diagnostic assessments, treatment and ongoing follow-up care, in a setting that best suits you and your family:

  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Couples and family therapy
  • Pharmacological management

Issues we may address through the program include:

  • Anxiety and uncertainty about disease state and prognosis
  • Coping with changes in body image and functioning
  • Communication with family members and others
  • Dealing with mood changes
  • Management of insomnia, fatigue and nausea
